any argue that the only difference between men and women is anatomy; hence, the cultural movement towards “egalitarianism”… a blurring of the sexes and roles. Likewise, in the church, many argue that “roles”… “headship and submission” were all part of the curse, rather than God’s original design, and are, therefore, abolished in Christ.
A careful study of God’s Word, however, points to men and women, though of equal value and abilities, having different purposes… reflecting different aspects of God’s “larger story”.
“So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27
Elisabeth Elliot puts it this way: “The first woman was made specifically for the first man—a helper—to meet, to respond to and to complement him. God made her from the man… and then brought her to the man. When Adam named Eve, he acted responsibly to ‘husband’ her—to provide for her, to cherish her, to protect her.
These two together represent the image of God… Neither he one or the other was adequate alone to bear the divine image” (from Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, ed. by John Piper and Wayne Grudem)
