Short Term Mission Opportunities
In addition to supporting our full-time career missionaries, Lakeside values “short-term” mission opportunities as well—not glorified overseas sightseeing trips, but serious short term projects where people are stretched and “poured out”.
Short term missions can be a valuable means of:
• exposing laymen to the mission field (Whereas this will lead some to pursue a more permanent mission involvement, it helps almost all short termers to begin to shape a “missions lifestyle” and become world Christians);
• encouraging and providing needed encouragement and respite for veteran missionaries;
• added strength in labor for the Lord (The career missionary often experiences a renewed focus when preparing for the work of short term teams or plans a work they might not be able to do otherwise); and
• strengthening the sending church.
“Churches from which short-term teams are sent benefit as mission work is no longer a theological concept or sermon illustration, but the visible effort of that church. It becomes a work in which their pastor and/or other members have actually participated. Check out a church that has sent short-term teams to the mission field and you will find a church that has increased its own effectiveness at home. A vision for touching the world will impact your vision for touching your own community.” Bob Hayes, African Christian Training Institute
