Evangelism and Discipleship for the Glory of God

A multigenerational, “household” approach to ministry cannot let its focus become inward or “ingrown”—concerned with its own households alone. Any approach to ministry that focuses on itself is shortsighted at best, and outright blasphemous at worst. Rather, ministry that is truly multigenerational has, at its foundation, an overarching commitment to the glory of God—to preserving for Him a people in every generation. It is a commitment that begins in our individual households, unites in the household of God—the Church, and pours over into our neighborhoods, our communities and to the ends of the earth.

Rev J.R. Miller put it this way in his book, Homemaking, 1882:

"Every true home is an influence of blessing in the community where it stands. Its lights shine out. Its songs ring out. Its spirit breathes out. The neighbors know whether it is hospitable or inhospitable, warm or cold, inviting or repelling. Some homes bless no lives outside their own circle; others are perpetually pouring out sweetness and fragrance. The ideal Christian home is a far reaching benediction. It sets its lamps in its windows, and while they give no less light and cheer to those within, they pour a little beam upon the gloom without, which may brighten some dark path and put a little cheer into the heart of some belated passer by. Its doors stand open to every one who comes seeking shelter from the storm, or sympathy in sorrow, or help in trial…”

A healthy household, firmly rooted in the Word of God, is truly a shelter from which Christ "shines out"... a "far reaching benediction" that draws others in, introduces them to Christ and helps them to find their own place in the household of God. There, in the church, they can grow, be built up in their faith, equipped to serve others and challenged to become a "far reaching benediction" themselves in their homes, neighborhoods, communities and to the uttermost ends of the earth.
